FKI Logistex® awarded €40M contract for ‘green’ baggage-handling system at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s - (04-Jun-08)
Key Facts:
• First airport to install next-generation ‘green’ LS-4000E baggage-handling system
• New system also includes FKI Logistex CrisBag™ RFID sort/transport and leading-edge Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) control systems
• €40m contract is part of a major extension to the International terminal
FKI Logistex® - a leading global supplier of automated baggage-handling systems - has been awarded a €40M contract by Finavia to design and install a new energy-efficient baggage handling system at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s international terminal. Finavia is the first airport operator to commission FKI Logistex’ new LS-4000E tilt-tray sortation system to achieve next-generation efficiencies in space and energy usage.
As part of an extension to the Helsinki-Vantaa International Terminal, FKI Logistex will design and install a state-of-the-art baggage handling system consisting of two energy-efficient LS-4000E sorters, and a 6.6 km CrisBag™ system for high-speed sort-and-transport between terminals, with 1,500 positions for early baggage storage (EBS). FKI Logistex will also supply their leading-edge Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) control system to manage baggage flow and direct baggage to mandatory security controls and the correct departure point.
“The combination of the FKI Logistex’ LS-4000E, CrisBag™ and SAC systems will deliver industry-leading energy efficiency, combined with the capability to sort-track-and-trace any baggage item, at any time, for enhanced security and operational efficiency” explained Søren Stenz, FKI Logistex’ International Sales Manager, Airports.
Jukka Laitinen, Airport Engineering, Finavia, added: “The new system will enable us to increase our handling capacity to meet higher levels of gateway traffic, whilst ensuring that we minimise both our costs, and our carbon footprint, by using the most energy-efficient systems. FKI Logistex’ ability to introduce leading-edge technology, combined with their vast experience in airport systems, provides an assured foundation for a smooth and effective implementation.”

The LS-4000E tilt-tray sorter features a new high-speed linear synchronous motor (LSM) based drive system providing the industry-best energy consumption whilst significantly reducing product life-cycle costs (PLCC). The power consumption of the LS-4000E is only 7.5 kW, approximately one quarter of the consumption of the industry norm.
The extension to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s International Terminal, and new baggage-handling system, will start serving long-haul passengers beginning of January 2010.
