Official opening of FKI Logistex® automated library system at University of Kassel, Germany - (13-Jan-09)
Key Facts:
• Successful implementation of new automated book return and sortation system
• Provides higher efficiency to meet demand from increased student numbers
• FKI Logistex® mini-sorter uses the same footprint as the equipment it replaces
• On-time completion of the project in just three months
FKI Logistex® – a leading global supplier of automated library systems – attended the official opening on 16th October 2008 of the new automated book return and sortation system, installed in the library of the University of Kassel, Germany. The system was designed and installed by FKI Logistex and officially switched on by the President of the University of Kassel, Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Postleb, and the Library Director, Dr. Axel Halle.
The project took just three months for design and installation, despite severe restrictions on available space. The compact modular design of the FKI Logistex’ mini-sorter provided the flexibility which enabled it to add significantly higher functionality within the same footprint as the system which it replaced. In addition to the mini-sorter, FKI Logistex installed an automated check-in counter with seven return bins, of which four are immediately operational, with the remaining three available for further expansion.
By fully automating the book return system, the library will dramatically improve handling capacity and efficiency, by processing around 1.1 million items per year at a rate of 200-300 items per hour.
Library Director at the University of Kassel, Dr. Axel Halle, explained; "The FKI Logistex automated book return and sorting system will help the library to increase service times for patrons as well as speeding up the return process. This is absolutely essential to manage demand from increasing numbers of students. Building the system in such an extremely compact environment was a challenge, but due to the good teamwork between the library and FKI Logistex, the project was finished in time for the winter semester."
FKI Logistex’ Area Sales Manager, Thomas Astheimer added; “Kassel Library represents a milestone in accelerated delivery and has achieved 100% customer satisfaction. Close cooperation with the library enabled detailed analysis of their short- and long-term objectives allowing FKI Logistex to develop a system which will meet Kassel’s requirements now, and for the foreseeable future.
Astheimer continued; “Freeing-up space for automated systems is the core issue in virtually all library installations. With a wide choice of possible systems, and extensive expertise, FKI Logistex can help libraries of all sizes, from those in the smallest towns, to the most extensive, high-profile institutions, to improve the efficiency of their library service.”
